JOHANNES MASWANGANYI  
 ( 1948 - ) 

1948 Born in Msengi Village, Giyani, Gazankulu
A self-taught sculptor of figures and animals. Works in wood which he combines with mixed media. Subject matter for these sculptures is varied, ranging from representations of pop stars and black businessmen to religious depictions based on stories from the Bible. One of very few black South African artists to have made representations of whites, particularly political personalities from the apartheid era.

Studies :
He learnt carving from his father who carved functional objects like bowls, spoons and 'jsuri' for crushing maize.
