Artist's Highway to the new Millennium

Jacobus Kloppers is an artist known for his exploration of objects found mainly in the Karoo landscape like reservoirs, kraals, gates and feeding troughs. Now this artist took a new 'turn' and with his new exhibition that opened at the Johans Borman Fine Art Gallery in IN·FIN·ART Building, Upper Buitengracht Street, Cape Town, there is a collection of a new series of work called " Tussenruimtes " ( In between Spaces)

Just as one thought that landscapes have been done in all mediums, sizes and styles comes something new. Jacobus whom many a critic describes  as just another landscape artist, has shown everybody that there is still much to be said about this age-old genre. The artist's interpretation of his paintings is somewhat surrealistic in approach.

While he travels he always takes his video camera with to take footage. These images are then utilised with the telephoto distortions, blurring and colour bleeding for his paintings and  become a reference in capturing a moment in time.

" It is the journey to something. When you are looking for a place, it all starts with the journey. The journey then becomes  important: small things along the way like mileposts, picnic spots, marks on the tarmac, place names, road signs and where the road meets the horizon "

Old road signs  and patches of real tarmac are now being transformed into his canvas. In these works  he forces the viewer to experience the moment, rather than the place.

Jacobus is a versatile artist who does  drawings, oil paintings, multi-media and  installations. It would be interesting to see where this road leads him from here ?

Fruitwraps

The subtle shifting of existing structures into different mediums, is the main element seen in this new colourfull exhibition by Cape Town Artist, Alex Hamilton at Bang the Gallery.

In making use of  three-dimensional canvasses, Alex captures a very different sense of perspective and in painting around the edges and making the objects "wrap" around box shaped canvasses, he creates an exciting visual impact.

This is indeed his most successful exhibition to date judging by all the red 'sold' stickers scattered throughout the exhibition.
