There were about 50 people in the auction room when the sale commenced. Bidding was slow on the Bainses and a stunning I'Ons went for only £ 1725. At lot 138 ( J.H. Pierneef ) all 16 phones started ringing and bidding picked up.
Christie's representative Nicholas Lambourn spoke about the auction afterwards and promised that his firm would like to include works of this nature in their upcoming, April 2000 auction again.
On Monday 11 October 1999 I attended the Sotheby's end of the year sale in Cape Town. There was a huge crowd and interest was high. Quite a few collectors and dealers from Gauteng traveled to Cape Town to attend the auction and bidding was fierce.
