PRESS RELEASE

SIZE MATTERS

6 MARCH 19h00 – 31 MARCH 2007

In this age of electronic communication size can become an almost ‘disappearing’ aspect of art; a computer screen reduces everything to equal size. Yet scale is important, literally and figuratively, and in the gallery physical dimensions often determine how art is viewed, enjoyed, understood. Tiny works can make a huge impact; large works invite close communication. Broad strokes can engage or enrage; fine lines mesmerize, sparkle, provoke.

This exhibition is based on a simple concept: size matters. We will show the largest works we can find by a selection of the artists whose work we regularly exhibit, and the smallest.

Not only size matters, shape does too: painters often experiment with oval, round or irregular shapes to enhance ideas; sculptors explore shape in space. Come along to review entrenched ideas about shape and size – you may just do a new take on the rectangle!
