FUSION AFRICA

The African pieces have been selected to demonstrate various visual affinities with certain works by Picasso. In some instances these similarities may be purely coincidental, providing no more than an amusing springboard to speculation about the origins of visual ideas. They might have been derived from the same primordial concepts (great minds think alike) but then again, they might not be.

This exhibition does not imply that Picasso had access to similar tribal pieces before producing his artworks, but nevertheless our selection process was done in consideration of pieces actually in Picasso’s African collection.

The South African artworks displayed  have been carefully chosen to enrich ongoing artistic dialogues between Africa and Europe, particularly now that works by Picasso are being exhibited here. South African artists may have been influenced as much by ‘the West’, or by Picasso, as by any other ‘external’ influences or by indigenous images like those of San or Ndebele art.
