In Visible Friends
Colin Payne Solo Exhibition 9 October - 3 November
Having an invisible friend is one thing, having a collection of them is another; constructing them into life sized sculptures is just plain bizarre. That is exactly the kind of description irreverent, upcoming talent Colin Payne likes. His work reflects a lighter side of life, yet contains much more than just bright colours and funny characters.
This sense of playfulness informs Colin’s first solo exhibition, In Visible
Friends, which opens at 34 Long on Tuesday 9 October 2007.
Hugely interested in popular culture, particularly animation, graphic novels and video games, Colin sees these media as collections of contemporary mythologies, stories through which the world is understood. He uses the building blocks of stories, namely characters and environments, to create his art, outside of the confines of a linear narrative.
Many artists working with popular culture, reference icons like Mickey Mouse or
Super Mario, or work with generic iconography such as Koons’
Puppy. Colin, however, is an artist who works with original creations, playing within the language of contemporary media and expressive systems of colour, form and symbolism. These languages are easily interpreted, because of their origins in pop culture.
Colin's 'friend' Skratchet was introduced to art lovers in a work entitled
Bubbles at the Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biennale in 2004; Skratchet will take a bow on this exhibition once again.
34Long Fine Art has become known as a venue for fresh local Neo-pop art and firmly believes that Colin Payne’s debut solo show will be inventive, exciting, and will present collectors with a valued opportunity to tap into the upcoming market for contemporary art.
In Visible Friends opens at 19h00 on Tuesday 9 October at 34 Long, and runs until Saturday 3 November.
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Friday 09h00 - 17h00; Saturday 10h00 - 14h00; closed on Sunday and Monday.
