Norman Catherine @
34 Long, Cape Town |
|||
| Although
Catherine’s work has been shown regularly in group exhibitions in and
around Cape Town, his last solo exhibition here was at the Gowlet Gallery
in 1982. When questioned recently about this long absence, Norman replied,
“ I was always looking for the right space to exhibit in … “.
Evidently, he has found the right space now, at 34 LONG. |

Norman Catherine’s thirty
year artistic career has culminated in a national touring retrospective
exhibition, Now and Then. Hosted by the Pretoria Art Museum and the
Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein in 2004, it is currently on show at
the University of Stellenbosch, Sasol Art Museum from 17 February to 19
March 2005. To coincide with this major retrospective exhibition, a commercial exhibition of Catherine’s work is being staged at 34 LONG, an exciting new art space in Cape Town’s city centre. Norman Catherine is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading contemporary artists. Throughout his long career, Catherine has commanded profound respect for his work, and for South African art generally, in the international art world. His first international exposure was in 1978, when he had a solo exhibition at the Netherlands Kunsthandel SAIU in Amsterdam. Born in 1949 in East London, Catherine’s career spans, and comments on, a dramatic period in South African history. During the period of South Africa’s struggle for democracy, his work earned the description ‘resistance art’. Today, he is represented in major private and corporate collections throughout the world. The exhibition, on which all works are for sale, contains new work and selected older pieces in various media, thus presenting a thoughtful overview of Catherine’s oeuvre. The exhibition features painting, sculpture in wood and bronze, graphic works and some huge surprises. A substantial catalogue of Catherine’s work will also be available. This valuable resource should be of interest to the serious Catherine collector as well as the more casually interested art lover. 34 LONG graciously welcomes Norman Catherine to Cape Town. Art lovers and investors are invited to this unique opportunity to acquire work by one of our greatest artists. |
