The Sotheby's Art Auction in Johannesburg was held on Monday the 13th May 2002.

The highlight was the no less than nine works by artist George Pemba; shown over the last few sales to be one of rising stars. It is not surprising to see no major works by Irma Stern as everybody following the market is familiar with the increasing resistance against the prices of her works and  works of lesser importance have found their way onto the market. Work by all the regulars were included - Pierneef, Sumner, Laubser, Preller, Sekoto, Wenning, Volschenk to name but a few.

It is refreshing to see more and more contemporary works finding their way to Sotheby's South Africa and this can surely be attributed to the rise in prices over the last sales. Works on auction  included fine examples of some of our most prominent contemporary artists like William Kentridge, Norman Catherine, Robert Hodgins, David Brown, Debora Bell and others.
