The Sotheby's Art Auction in Johannesburg was held on Monday the 7th May 2001.
There were a few surprises at this sale. For the first time a
contemporary work by artist Karel Nel was illustrated on the front cover of the
catalogue. The works on auction included excellent
examples of some of our most prominent
contemporary artists like William Kentridge, Norman Catherine, Robert Hodgins,
David Brown, Debora Bell and others. These contemporary works fetched high
prices. The art market overall seems to have recovered slightly
as results were better than at the last two sales.
