A selection,
comprising more than a 100 works, of the private collection of Louis and
Charlotte Schachat owner of the " Kunskamer " Gallery, Cape
Town, is currently on exhibition at the Sasol Art Museum of the
University of Stellenbosch. This exhibition gives the public an opportunity to have a glimpse into
the private collection of one of South Africa's best known art dealers.
The collection was started in the early 1960 with the help of
collectors such as J du P Scholtz, Jean and Himie Bernadt and gallery
directors Joe Wolpe, Linda Givon and Everard Read. The Schachats slowly began to apply and enjoy their personal preferences and
empirical knowledge in shaping their own growing art collection.
From
the start they began to purchase the works of established
artists as well as of young, mostly Cape-based, artists. Hence it came
about that works by Pranas Domsaitis, Lippy
Lipshitz, Cecil Higgs and Jean Welz began to rub shoulders with works by Stanley Pinker,
Helmut Starcke, Christo
Coetzee, and Bill Davis. From the 1970s works by painters and sculptors
from the north, such as Robert Hodgins, Karel Nel, Helen Sebidi,
Norman Catherine and William Kentridge, also began to feature in their
collection.
