By Andries Loots 18 March 2000

This week  artist Sam Nhlengethwa is featured.

Sam Nhlengethwa ( 1955 -  )

Born 1955, Payneville, Springs

Studies :
1976 - Art Foundation, Johannesburg
1977 - 1978 Two years Fine Art Diploma, Rorkes Drift Centre

Shaft 1987, Collage on Paper Sam's work is largely characterized by collage and mixed medium on media like canvas or paper. He does however also work with acrylic and oil on canvas and occasionally also uses pencil and  watercolour. Sam has never worked for his buyers and also wouldn't allow them to prescribe to him. Collectors have adjusted their taste to suit the constant change in his work. He handles every show or exhibition on a different level  and this allows him to be more spontaneous and stimulates his creativity. Once seen as one of South Africa's leading Resistance artists he has grown from this and adjusted his style and content of his paintings to address different issues of the day like the lives of the Miners in the Gold Mines were he spend some time as part of his research. Music, specifically Jazz, also forms a part of his themes.
